For the past two months, I have been coaching a travel girls lacrosse team called the Dutchess Monarchs and I can honestly say that it was one of the best coaching experiences I have had. The girls improved so much over the course of eight weeks and I am so proud of how hard they worked. Not only did Alissa and I teach them a thing or two, they definitely taught me a thing or two.
They taught me patience;
— You have to be patient when carrying the ball so you can make the best pass, you need to be patient when chasing a girl so you can check her at the right time, and most of all, you need to be patient with your teammates.
— There are times that you need to drive the cage, and give the extra few inches in order to get the job done. This is what intensity is all about.
— The more the girls played, the more confidence they gained. The more you practice something, the more you know that you’ll be able to do it. If you have confidence in your abilities, you’ll be able to do anything.
— Sacrificing yourself for your team could not have been more apparent than in our last game this past weekend. Half of our team was wrapped in tape, or covered in ice, and everyone played until they couldn’t anymore. They gave their all for their team, and were able to pull out a close 4-3 win to round out the weekend.
— Your team is your family, and you protect your family no matter what. You stick by them when times are tough, and cheer for them when they’re good. Whether you lose games or you win games, your family is always there for you. As Lilo says, “Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind”.
— The girls were so extremely passionate about the sport that they’re playing; it’s still just a game, a game with many possibilities. It’s incredible to see these girls so passionate about a game that they love so much, that it’s inspiring me to bring more passion into my life.
I have learned so much about myself as a coach over the past few weeks with them and I am so incredible happy that we ended our summer season on a great note. I can’t wait to see where they all end up in a few short years. Can’t wait to (hopefully) coach these girls again in the near future.
Thank you 2017 Monarchs for an unforgettable season.
